George Clooney is not only an actor, director, producer and writer, he's also an active humanitarian; supporting many charities.  As of January 31 2008, George Clooney is the 9th UN Messenger of Peace.
 
The United Nations, The Save Darfur Coalition, The United Way, The ONE Campaign and the International Rescue Committee are just some of the charities / organisations in recent years to benefit from George Clooney's high - profile involvement. 
 
In May 2007, George, along with fellow Ocean's Thirteen cast members Brad Pitt & Matt Damon, plus producer, Jerry Weintraub, launched their own charity, Not On Our Watch.

George Clooney visits Darfur

George Clooney: UN Messenger of Peace
 
On January 18 2008, it was announced that George Clooney has been designated by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, to raise awareness of the world body’s peacekeeping efforts.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this appointment,” Mr. Clooney said. “I look forward to working with the United Nations in order to build public support for its critically important work in some of the most difficult, dangerous and dire places in the world.”

He received his UN Messenger of Peace designation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 31 January 2008. On that day [pictures, press, video], George Clooney also attended a photo call with his parents, Nick & Nina Clooney, before holding a press conference on his January 2008 trip to Darfur, Chad & the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  • 100% of AmericanLife TV's proceeds from the sale of George & Nick Clooney's A Journey to Darfur DVD will go to Not On Our Watch.

The Save Darfur Coalition's mission is to raise public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of two million people in the Darfur region.

The International Rescue Committee

International Rescue Committee (IRC) 

The IRC is at work in some 25 countries, distributing life-saving aid, rebuilding devastated communities, establishing schools and training teachers, caring for war-traumatized children, rehabilitating health care systems, restoring lost livelihoods, reuniting families, strengthening the capacity of local aid groups and institutions, supporting good governance initiatives in post-conflict locations, and for refugees unable to return home and admitted to the U.S. resettlement program, helping them rebuild their lives across the United States.

Tackling the topic of Darfur is very much a joint effort by the father-son team of Nick and George Clooney.
 
Their documentary, "A Journey To Darfur" premiered on AmericanLife TV Network on January 15 2007 and includes previously unseen footage from their trip to Darfur in April 2006.
 
100% of AmericanLife TV's proceeds from the sale of George & Nick Clooney's A Journey to Darfur DVD will go to Not On Our Watch.

  • In April 2006, George Clooney and his father, Nick Clooney, travelled to Sudan and Chad with the International Rescue Committee, to see the devastation in Darfur for themselves.
  • On April 30 2006, a rally took place in Washington, orchestrated by the Save Darfur Coalition. George and Nick Clooney gave speeches.
  • On September 13 2006, George, Nick and Nina Clooney attended a dinner in New York City, hosted by the Save Darfur Coalition.

  • On September 25 2006, George Clooney attended a Burbank press conference where California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation to divest state pension money from Sudan.
  • In December 2006, George Clooney, Don Cheadle and Joey Cheek travelled to China and Egypt to talk to representatives about the ongoing genocide in Darfur. See the pictures
    • On Dec. 15 George Clooney (with the above) met with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, where a press conference followed.

    • In January 2007, Nick Clooney was interviewed by MSNBC and Channel 9.
  • On March 25 2007, George Clooney wrote an open letter to German chancellor Angela Merkel "calling on her to take 'decisive action' in the region in the face of al-Bashir's failure to respond to the U.N. resolutions."
  • Nick Clooney continues to give speeches and participate at Darfur awareness events all over the Country. As of October 2007, he has given 89 presentations on the topic.
  • In May 2007, George Clooney co-founded Not On Our Watch and continues to raised funds and awareness through the charity.
  • George Clooney features in 'Darfur Now' and narrates/executive-produces 'Sand and Sorrow'.
  • On December 13 2007, the 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates presented George Clooney and Don Cheadle with the 2007 Peace Summit Award - for their humanitarian work on Darfur - at its annual meeting in Rome.
  • In January 2008, George Clooney made a second trip to Darfur and Chad, and also visited the Democratic Republic of Congo and India.

The United Way

  • George Clooney is an At-Large board member of The United Way.
  • Clooney was one of several individuals in the entertainment industry who participated in the September 11th Telethon: America: A Tribute to Heroes and the Tsunami Relief Telethon, which were broadcast on major television networks.
  • In September 2005, George Clooney donated $1 million to the United Way Hurricane Katrina Response Fund.
  • In March 2006, George Clooney donated his Acadamy Award gift bag to an auction to raise funds for The United Way.
